In our 24/7 world stress has become one of the biggest threats to our health, and the main cause of many illnesses. We are always ‘on’. On our phones, tablets, laptops. From consuming different types of content on social media, constantly checking our emails and likes on Insta or Facebook. To binge watching the latest trending tv shows.
Add to this the struggle of the modern day working environment and the constant juggle to find home/work life harmony.
The research backs this up
Around a fifth of the population have reported feeling anxious, and up to 85% of adults in the UK say they suffer from some form of anxiety.
One of the most worrying statistics to me is that around a quarter of 16-24 year olds feels stressed or anxious every single day.
On the flip side, it appears that the over 55s feel less anxiety and stress or experience none at all. One reason for this could be that this age group are spending more time and money investing in their health and wellness than ever before, going for regular complementary therapy sessions.
Finding time to switch off
With the constant mental stimulation we’re not committing enough time to relaxing. We say things like “oh, I don’t have time to relax”. We’re kidding ourselves. We find plenty of time to watch back-to-back episodes of The Real Housewives of somewhere or another but we don’t have time to properly relax and switch off?
If these words have come out of your mouth, I suggest taking a notepad and pen and logging how much TV you watch, or how much time you spend aimlessly scrolling through social media, every day for a week. At the end of the week tot up the time. Most of us would be pretty shocked at the result.
Reiki and stress
Reiki treatments are great for relieving stress and discovering what’s causing it. Most of the time it’s not just one thing but a culmination of different causes that have built up over time.
For example, you’re a working mum with two kids, running the house and your other half’s away with work a lot of the time. You constantly push your needs down to take care of everyone else’s. Then can’t understand why you always feel so knackered. Sound familiar?
Giving yourself permission to come for a Reiki session is not selfish. How can you give to others if you’re depleted?
Receiving Reiki will hi-light any areas you may be holding onto tension in your physical and energy bodies. This enables the practitioner to hone in and focus on these areas and unblock any stuck energy. If left, the risk of illness is greater.
Having a good chat with your practitioner before your treatment about how you’re currently feeling helps them understand what’s going on for you at that time.
Receiving Reiki is also very relaxing and my clients usually fall asleep. I can see them physically relaxing as their breathing changes, starts to slow down and become deeper.
I once had a client come to me who was under a lot of pressure at work. They said they felt like their chest was congested like when they have a cold. I worked on this area a lot during the session.
Straight after the session the client said their chest felt clearer and a lot better. This result continued weeks later too.
Another client was close to burnout and during the session I could feel how tired they actually were. They fell into a deep sleep and reported later that the constant pain had gone from their neck and shoulders. This result showed the client just how much they’d been burning the candle at both ends.
- Stress is in all our 21st century lives – awareness is key
- Figure out the stressors in your life and think of ways to reduce them where possible
- Take time daily to unplug
- Invest in yourself by having regular complementary therapy treatments. If you think you can’t afford it, why not forgo your fancy coffee and take a pack-up for your lunch instead of buying it?
- Laugh and have fun – don’t be serious all of the time. Dance around your kitchen etc., be silly with your kids, have fun with your friends.
